RELEASE: Rep. Aaron Repinski’s Bill to Eliminate State Tax on Social Security Benefits Passes First Committee

Wednesday, February 12, 2025

St. Paul, MN – Representative Aaron Repinski (R-Winona) is leading the charge to eliminate Minnesota’s tax on Social Security benefits, a move aimed at providing much-needed financial relief to the state’s retirees. Today, House File 100 received its first hearing in the House Taxes Committee, marking a critical step in the fight to reduce tax burdens on Minnesota seniors.

“Eliminating the state tax on Social Security is a simple and effective way to make life more affordable for our seniors,” said Rep. Repinski. “Minnesotans who have spent their lives working and paying into the system deserve to keep the benefits they’ve earned—without facing additional burdens in retirement. Minnesota seniors should not be penalized for staying in our state. Removing this tax will help them keep more of their hard-earned money and provide greater financial security.”

The proposal has gained bipartisan attention in past sessions and has been an issue both parties have campaigned on, as more lawmakers recognize the need to support fixed-income retirees. During the committee hearing, House Democrats turned on the proposal, arguing that the state needs that money more than seniors do.

"It's unfortunate that my Democrat colleagues have decided that allowing seniors to keep the entirety of their Social Security payments is no longer an issue they support," Repinski said. "It's disappointing that they believe the state needs this revenue, despite blowing an $18 billion surplus just last year, and adding an additional $10 billion in new taxes to Minnesota families already struggling with rising costs."

The bill passed the Tax Committee on a party-line vote and moved to Ways and Means.
