Legislative Update- Honoring the Will of the Voters

Friday, February 7, 2025
Hiltsley

Dear neighbors,

I have big news from the State House!

Democrats have secured a hard-fought power-sharing agreement that honors and protects the will of the voters both in Shakopee and statewide. This agreement is what Democrats have been seeking all along. You can read my official press statement here

Honor the Will of the Voters

On the first day of session, House Republicans violated the state Constitution and attempted to seize power that voters did not give them. If a single Democrat had gone to the Capitol, we know Republicans would have kicked out a duly elected state representative from Shakopee and seized control of the Speakership and committees for the next two years, even though Minnesotans elected equal numbers of DFL and Republican state representatives. Democrats refused to let that happen, and were successful.

Rep. Brad Tabke from Shakopee will serve his term in office, and Democrats and Republicans will share power if the House returns to a 67-67 tie. Committees will have co-chairs and equal numbers of DFL and Republican members. Passing a bill out of committee and on the House floor will require bipartisan support.

I’m pleased to report that the 2025 session properly and lawfully got underway on Thursday, February 6. I’ve been working hard in our district over the past few weeks, and I’m excited to bring that work back to the State Capitol. Here’s a look at some of people and organizations I’ve been working with for the community and across the state:

Thank You for a Successful community Town Hall put on by Minnesota People of Color and Indigenous Caucus (POCI Caucus)!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a powerful and engaging discussion! Your voices and insights are invaluable as we fight for equity and justice in Minnesota.

Special thanks to our community and advocates for sharing their perspectives. If you missed it, watch the livestream replay on the House POCI Caucus Facebook page. Let’s keep building together!

I was interested to learn about Face to Face Health and Counseling’s community model when I toured the facility recently. Once serving as a volunteer-run walk-in crisis counseling and reproductive health clinic, they’re pursuing an affordable housing project that would provide 20 units of affordable housing to at-risk youth.

The Rondo Community Land Trust is deeply rooted in the community, creating pathways to homeownership and entrepreneurship for those historically denied opportunity. Their work is more than housing—it’s about preserving the legacy of Rondo, strengthening families, and building generational wealth.

I’m inspired by their vision and the legislative priorities they’ve identified to expand this impact. Their commitment to empowering residents and business owners ensures that Rondo’s future remains in the hands of the community that built it.

Huge shoutout to community member Katie Flanigan for her incredible work in our community! Her dedication to bringing key stakeholders together made Girls Basketball Youth Night at Osseo High a huge success—and so much fun!

A special congratulations to Roger Backstrom, owner of Godfather’s Pizza in Brooklyn Park, for being honored by the community with the 2024 COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD! His unwavering support and commitment to our youth and community do not go unnoticed—we are truly grateful!

I remain committed to working alongside our Brooklyn Park and Osseo neighbors to build a state where everyone—not just the wealthy and powerful—can thrive.
