Legislative Update: Minnesota House power-sharing agreement reached

Monday, February 10, 2025

Dear neighbors,

I have big news from the State House! Democrats have secured a hard-fought power-sharing agreement that honors and protects the will of the voters both in Shakopee and statewide. This agreement is what Democrats have been seeking all along.

On the first day of session, House Republicans violated the state Constitution and attempted to seize power that voters did not give them. If a single Democrat had gone to the Capitol, we know Republicans would have kicked out a duly elected state representative from Shakopee and seized control of the Speakership and committees for the next two years, even though Minnesotans elected equal numbers of DFL and Republican state representatives. Democrats refused to let that happen and were successful.

Thanks to our efforts, Rep. Brad Tabke from Shakopee will serve his term in office, and Democrats and Republicans will share power if the House returns to a 67-67 tie. Committees will have co-chairs and equal numbers of DFL and Republican members. Passing a bill out of committee and on the House floor will require bipartisan support.

I’m pleased to report that the 2025 session properly and lawfully got underway on Thursday, February 6. I’ve been working hard in our district over the past few weeks, and I’m excited to bring that work back to the State Capitol.

I will continue working alongside Minnesotans to build a future where everyone can get ahead, not just the rich and powerful. I will continue to stand up for Minnesotans’ rights and freedoms, and I will do everything in my power to protect people from the chaos, cruelty, and incompetence coming out of the Trump Administration.

Please continue to be in touch about your own priorities and to share your ideas. It’s an honor to represent you and our vibrant district at the Capitol.

Supporting Youth Leadership

I had the privilege of meeting high school students from across Minnesota who came to the ‘People’s House’ to make their voices heard. These young leaders are the future of our state and the voice of tomorrow. Their passion, energy, and vision inspire hope for a brighter and more equitable future.

Supporting our young generations and the educators who guide them is essential to the success of Minnesota. I remain committed to championing education and advocating for strong, well-resourced public schools—not only in District 65A, but throughout the entire state.

Investing in education today is an investment in the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow. Together, we can build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Interview with Local Production

I was honored to join a local BIPOC multimedia production to share legislative updates with our community! We discussed the importance of community engagement and shared updates on the upcoming legislative session this year. It’s essential that our community stays informed and involved as we work together to address key issues and build a stronger future.

Thank you to the Oromia 11 team for giving me the opportunity to connect and share our vision for District 65A. Let’s continue the conversation and keep pushing for positive change!

As Vice Chair of the St. Paul Delegation, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Council President Mitra Jalali for her dedicated service to the City of Saint Paul. Our delegation joins thousands of constituents who deeply appreciate all her contributions to our city over her seven-year tenure. Her leadership has been consistently strong, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact she continues to make in the movement for democracy.

House Legislative People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Town Hall

I was happy to help facilitate our first, and definitely not last, POCI Caucus community town hall in the heart of our Rondo neighborhood. We presented information on key legislation and issues impacting the community, followed by a robust Q&A session. The discussion covered a range of important topics, including gender violence, after-school programs and wraparound services, and educator funding. It was an honor to have Keith Baker of Reconnect Rondo, Johnny Allen, Jr., founder of The JK Movement, and Councilwoman Anika Bowie share their insights on honoring the Rondo community by uplifting our youth and empowering the movement to build a thriving Rondo, rooted in its rich legacy. I'm deeply grateful to all the community members who came out and lent their voices to these critical conversations.
