Legislative Update: 02/14/2025

Friday, February 14, 2025

Dear neighbors,

Last week, Democrats returned to the Capitol! We secured a hard-fought power-sharing agreement that honors and protects the will of the voters both in Shakopee and statewide. This agreement is what Democrats have been seeking all along.

On the first day of session, House Republicans violated the state Constitution and attempted to seize power that voters did not give them. If a single Democrat had gone to the Capitol, we know Republicans would have kicked out a duly elected state representative from Shakopee and seized control of the Speakership and committees for the next two years, even though Minnesotans elected equal numbers of DFL and Republican state representatives. Democrats refused to let that happen and were successful.

Thanks to our efforts, Rep. Brad Tabke from Shakopee will serve his term in office, and Democrats and Republicans will share power if the House returns to a 67-67 tie. Committees will have co-chairs and equal numbers of DFL and Republican members. Passing a bill out of committee and on the House floor will require bipartisan support.

I’m pleased to report that the 2025 session properly and lawfully got underway on Thursday, February 6. I’ve been working hard in our district over the past few weeks, and I’m excited to bring that work back to the State Capitol. I want to reiterate my gratitude for everyone’s ongoing support during this unprecedented time, I am honored to defend and preserve our democratic integrity. I am committed to working with all my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to put Minnesotans first.

I will continue working alongside Minnesotans to build a future where everyone can get ahead, not just the rich and powerful. I will continue to stand up for Minnesotans’ rights and freedoms, and I will do everything in my power to protect people from the chaos, cruelty, and incompetence coming out of the Trump Administration.

I value your input and encourage you to continue sharing your priorities and ideas for improving our community and state. I'm committed to representing District 43A's values at the Capitol and advocating for an equitable budget that helps all Minnesotans thrive.

Inclusive Democracy Caucus

I became a Co-Chair of the Inclusive Democracy Caucus because I take my role as a defender of democracy with utmost seriousness, knowing that our system of self-governance depends on an engaged an informed population. In this role, I am committed to protecting election security in Minnesota by fighting disinformation, supporting election workers, and ensuring equal access to the ballot box. The fight for democracy is a relay race, passed from one generation to the next. This is a critical moment for this movement, and like a well-executed handoff in a relay race, it demands a smooth transition. My experience as a college runner has prepared me to take the baton and drive us forward.

This week, we learned along with the nation that 17 employees within the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have been placed on leave pending a review, according to a source familiar with the situation. Our caucus released a press statement condemning this outrageous decision and ultimately, we are calling on the Minnesota GOP to join us in holding President Trump accountable for his actions.

House Legislative People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Town Hall

As Co-Chair of the House Legislative People of Color and Indigenous Caucus, I was honored to help facilitate our first, and certainly not last, community town hall. Our first stop was the Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul. We had a discussion about different legislation and issues impacting the community, followed by a Q&A. Topics included gender violence, after-school programs and wraparound services, and funding for educators. I am thankful to all the community members who came out to lend their voices to these important issues. I look forward to hosting more community town halls with our POCI Caucus throughout the state.
