Hello neighbors,

Last Sunday, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, indicating that we have 6 weeks of winter to come. Particularly based on the bitter temps that returned on Tuesday and the snow that followed, I think Phil might be right. I am looking forward to our eventual spring, but I am thankful for the continued opportunity for ice fishing, skiing, and other winter activities that we can enjoy because of the sustained cold weather and snow.

Constituent

I had the pleasure of meeting several constituents this week. At the Minnesota Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies 'Day on the Hill,' I met Shari and Todd Fruechte from Little Falls. Thank you for taking your time to come to St. Paul and share your concerns with me.

In the near future, we will have an education press conference, where we will highlight how we aim to meet our goal of raising standards and reducing mandates. We have legislation drafted that will establish an Office of Achievement and Innovation in the Dept. of Education, allow school districts to opt out of the controlling mandates from last session, and enhance the 'Read Act' to improve literacy and educational outcomes. At a time when only half of our Minnesota students are reading or doing math at their grade level, reform is absolutely necessary.

In between my busy meeting schedule, I have been working on additional legislation that I look forward to introducing soon. One piece of legislation that I have drafted is for the Camp Ripley Veterans State Trail. The bill would provide $2 million for the construction of three segments of the Camp Ripley/Veterans State Trail, providing greater opportunity to enjoy our beautiful nature in the surrounding areas. Another bill I drafted is for Lake Mille Lacs economic relief. The economy has created difficult circumstances for our local businesses to thrive, and this bill would provide assistance to businesses that have been adversely affected by economic conditions for many years near Lake Mille Lacs.

I am eager to hit the ground running in a full House chamber, as House GOP and DFL members reached an agreement mid-week that got us officially operating yesterday. I will keep you updated with whatever comes next as we have resumed normal legislative activities now.
Shoutout to Elliott Oberton of the Little Falls Nordic Ski Team, who placed 7th at sections and advanced to the state championships, happening next week. Congratulations Elliott!

BTW: by the way, check out Brian's Floral Co. in Little Falls as you think about who you're getting flowers for Valentine's Day next Friday!
