News From Representative Kresha 3-10-2017

Dear Neighbors,

Even though it's chilly today, we're hoping for another warm-up in the near future. Make sure you remember it's daylight savings time this weekend. Don't forget to set your clocks!

It was another busy week in St. Paul. I was visited by a coalition of Catholics from Pierz, Little Falls, and Upsala. The group shared two issues of importance: respecting natural life from birth to a natural death and tax credits for school foundations. There is a movement across the nation to usher in assisted suicide practices. I acknowledge end-of-life conversations are difficult. But they are end-of-life decisions and I don't believe ending a life should ever be easy.

Secondly, the Catholic coalition advocated for the tax credits for school foundations. As they rightly acknowledged, this is a tax credit for people wishing to direct their charitable donations towards education scholarships. It is not an attack on any educational rights --but an extension of educational options for parents.

I was also able to visit with township members this week. It is always great to hear from members who are giving up their time to serve on local township boards. I fully support keeping the transportation formula in place to make sure the townships get a fair funding stream. Good to see all of you at the meeting!

Lastly, I had a hearing that ensures children in out-of-home placement get rightful access to legal counsel. Many may not know that juveniles 10 years or older have a legal right to a public defender for child protection and custody proceedings. These kids need to have at least one, objective legal voice to help guide them through a sometimes complicated legal system and a difficult time. If you’re interested in finding out more, KSTP did a great story on the bill hearing.
