Rep. Tina Liebling Floor Remarks on Failed GOP Bill

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted down HF20, a Republican-authored bill that would reduce data privacy for Minnesotans and enhance the power of special interest industries. The Minnesota House of Representatives requires 68 votes to pass a bill, making the 66-66 vote a failing vote.

Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) led the opposition that failed the bill’s passage. Rep. Liebling made the following remarks before the vote:

“When we need people to stand up to unelected billionaires pawing through their data in Washington, Keith Ellison is doing exactly that—and standing up [to] other illegal activities that are taking place from the Trump administration. It's no wonder that some in this chamber might want to stop him and throw roadblocks in his way.

“What does this have to do with the price of eggs? Well, absolutely nothing—except if it does, it's nothing good. Because stopping the attorney general from working for Minnesotans by opening up data and letting people paw through it and use it for no good purpose, but [rather] to stop the attorney general from doing his work, that does raise costs for Minnesotans, whether it's eggs or gas or housing or drugs or any of many other things.”
