MINNESOTA HOUSE COMMITTEE WILL HOLD EMINENT DOMAIN HEARING IN PRINCETON

Friday, February 3, 2006
ST. PAUL – Area residents will have a chance to speak with their legislators about eminent domain when the Minnesota House Civil Law Committee comes to Princeton on February 16. The committee will convene a hearing at 7 p.m. in the Princeton Party House in downtown Princeton. State Representative Sondra Erickson, who lives in Princeton, invited the committee after hearing strong opinions about private property rights from constituents. “People don’t want the government coming in and taking their homes or their property and the committee needs to hear that.” Erickson said. “The Civil Law Committee will primarily be responsible for writing legislation to protect against eminent domain abuses and they need to hear the experiences of affected property owners.” A bill before the committee would strictly define the situations under which the government can use eminent domain powers to take property. It would prohibit taking private property for the use of for-profit development by another private property owner and make sure “just compensation” given to property owners includes legal fees and the loss of value to a business if they ran one on their property. Residents who wish to testify can sign up at the hearing by signing in at the door. The Princeton Party House is in downtown Princeton at the intersection of Rum River Drive and First Street. -30-
