ST. PAUL – State Rep. Sondra Erickson received one of five 2008 Legislative Awards at the 90th annual meeting of the Minnesota American Legion in Bloomington on Friday, July 18.
Erickson’s award was the result of her work in the American Legion Oratorical contest, a program where high school students compete for college scholarships by crafting and delivering patriotic prose. She has promoted the program at the local level, helping students become involved.
Erickson – a former Princeton High School English teacher – has judged contests at the district and state levels, including the 2008 state finals. She said coordinating the Oratorical is a perfect fit because of her years of teaching English at the secondary level.
"I enjoy using my teaching skills to help our young people learn about the Constitution and am very proud of the depth to which the students write their oratoricals,” Erickson said. “I'm even more impressed with their delivery at the competitions."
Erickson is a member of Woodcock-Herbst Post 216 American Legion Auxiliary of Princeton and has been the legislative chair for about 10 years.
She was VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Legislator of the Year in 2006 and has received numerous district and state awards from the American Legion Auxiliary for her legislation supporting Minnesota veterans and military.
