To the editor, For many, all we know of war is from what we read in the history books or see on television. Some of us are blessed with family members who served America in current or prior wars who willingly share with us their experiences. But those of us who have never been in a war zone cannot ever fully comprehend the measure of the sacrifice our military men and women endure. For this reason, we must always come together on Memorial Day and bring to light our appreciation, admiration and love for America’s veterans. It is our chance to show remembrance and honor for the cost of freedom. I like to think that the servicemen and women we honor today would be especially proud that as we come together we do so as a community of families. Gathering as families on Memorial Day is such a simple symbol but it conveys so much meaning. Families share, reminisce and enjoy their time together. These are the uniquely American attributes to freedom that are worth protecting and worth preserving. So on behalf of a grateful community, I would like to say to veterans here and gone, and their families, a simple, sincere “thank you.” May you always feel the love and gratitude we have for you. You have done your country proud. Sincerely, Sondra Erickson
