1.1A house resolution
1.2expressing regret for conflicts between Native Americans and European settlers.
1.3BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the Minnesota Legislature, recognizing that they
1.4are not the ones to issue a formal apology for past indiscretions involving Indian People, but
1.5can express regret for what happened shall:
1.6(1) express regret at the deaths of Minnesota Indians and European settlers as the result
1.7of past conflicts;
1.8(2) acknowledge that on many occasions conflicts resulted in cruel and inhumane acts;
1.9(3) express regret for the ramifications of former offenses and commit to build on the
1.10positive relationships of the past and present to move toward a brighter future where all the
1.11people of what is now known as the State of Minnesota live reconciled as brothers and sisters, and
1.12harmoniously steward and protect this land together;
1.13(4) urge indigenous American people and Americans of European descent to treat each
1.14other with respect and to resolve disputes in a spirit of compromise and recognition of our mutual
1.15humanity; and
1.16(5) commend other state governments that have begun reconciliation efforts with Indian
1.17tribes located in their boundaries and encourage all state governments similarly to work toward
1.18reconciling relationships with Indian tribes within their boundaries.
1.19BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota
1.20that this resolution is an expression of regret and does not affect land titles or other legal claims.
